"National Game"

Classes have been participating in the "National Game" this year, each each class representing an Australian town. At the end of term the classes set up displays featuring their town and other classwork. Here is a small sample.  More images will be on our Events page soon.

ANZAC Day

May 1st: Our annual commemoration of ANZAC Day was held last week and you can read about the ceremony in today's newsletter.  In the foyer, there was also a wonderful display of student work commemorating Queensland's Indigenous Diggers in World War 1.

District  Spelling Bee

A number of our Durack dragons have proved to be Spelling Wizards in disguise.

Urged by Mrs Harling to "Be Brave" and to "Participate to progress", a group of Year 4, 5, and 6 students competed in the District Spelling Bee held at Glenala State High School and performed brilliantly. Every student did very well, with Angela taking 1st place in Year 4, Louretta and Rellick coming  1st and 2nd respectively in Year 5, and Anthony winning 1st place in Year 6.

 "Blue Wail"

      From Mrs K......

As part of World Science Festival Brisbane, Year 5/6 K participated in Hatchery Crusaders Art
Competition hosted by The Queensland Museum.  Our class had submitted 2 pieces of artwork and one of our entries, BLUE WAIL was selected as one of the finalists. This artwork was about plastic pollution in the ocean and the impact it has on our marine life. The students collected plastic from our school and created a Blue Whale.

On Wednesday, 20th of March 2019, our artwork reached second place and received a silver trophy. This artwork will be displayed in the Hatchery Crusaders display area on Level 2, Queensland Museum during World Science Festival Brisbane (20-24 March).

We read newspaper articles about plastics found inside marine animals and watched videos about the "Great Pacific Garbage Patch"  Year 5s decided to use the whale as an inspiration for our Marine Plastic Pollution Art Competition entry.  The body our our Blue Whale was covered in plastics found in the Year 5 eating area.  We glues plastics on a picture of a breaching whale to raise awaremess of the effect of plastics on marine creatures

The Dragon theme for 2019 is :Dragons Sign Up for Learning" relating to, of course, Durack Dragons being Safe Respectful Learners, but also to our first full year of learning AUSLAN (Australian Sign Language).
