The Australian Curriculum supports targeted phonics instruction in the Early Years of schooling. Our Prep Phonics program provides a consistent and balanced approach to the teaching of phonics instruction that includes the following components:
- Integrate components of Jolly Phonics, MiniLit and Words Their Way program
- Explicit teaching of letter sounds and symbols using warm-ups, letter/sound sorts and interactive whiteboard resources
- Use common language, actions (Jolly phonics), set scope and sequence & lesson delivery
- Targeted segmenting and blending – hand actions from MiniLit
- Practice and record letter formation and directionality using gradual release model
- Embed program in the literacy block
- Consolidate phonological awareness skills through the Prep Oral Language Program – Story Bridge
The Phonics Program includes:
- Daily warm-up using familiar sounds
- Daily blending and segmenting practice
- Introducing three letter sounds per week
- Daily handwriting and letter formation practice
- Identify and use letter sounds in reading, writing and follow-up activities
