Whole class robust vocbulary instruction
Research shows that children who hear and use far fewer words require explicit and targeted instruction compared to children who hear and use words from an early age
Durack's strong bilingual population means that many people have limited exposure to English outside school
Vocabulary development is one of the highest predictorsof academic success and literacy learning
We needed a daily program that was high-impact and integrated into other key learning areas
Runs year-round in Years 1–3
Daily lessons: 10-50 minutes as part of literacy block
Explicit teaching of Tier 2 vocabulary with high curriculum mileage
Intentional revision of words learned each week/term
Strong contextual base: use of 'sensational sentences' encouraged at all times
Supported transfer: students rewarded for hearing or using 'power words' when talking/writing
